PUNCH+SOIL GALLERY

International Juried Exhibition: A bell is a cup until its struck” Dec 6 — 30, 2007
Reception Thursday, Dec 6, 5:30-8:30 PM
112 3rd Avenue South, Seattle WA

Featuring works by Gretchen Bennett, Sarah Bergmann, Jamey Braden, Collin Bradford, Mike Bray, Chris Fennell, Douglas Gast, Margo Geddes, Richard Gilles, Sol Hashemi, Florian Japp, Danielle Kelly, Lisa Liedgren, Jenene Nagy, Brett Walker, Mary Wyatt, Monica A. Padilla SOIL and PUNCH team up to present the work of 16 artists from across the US and beyond. Juried by Eric Fredericksen, director of Western Bridge, this exhibition includes a focused assemblage of photography, video, sculpture, ink on paper, and other mixed media.

“Given the rich assortment of work submitted for this exhibition, a juror could make any number of exhibitions. Given the two spaces and their divergent histories, I chose to make two linked, loosely thematic exhibitions. At SOIL, a series of confrontations with geometry, at PUNCH, confrontations with nature. Documentary imagery dominates, though what is being documented is often a constructed situation. Responding to tensions in the work between structure and entropy, as between representation and abstraction, the exhibition remains unresolved. Each space will also display work which does not fit into this scheme, in order that the scheme not completely destroy the illusion that an exhibition juried by a single juror could result in an objective accounting of the best work submitted.” —
Eric Fredericksen, director, Western Bridge

Featured in this group exhibition is drawing #9 (LeWitt) from Lisa Liedgren’s MoAH meditation on art history series. The project, which started in early 2000, uses iconic imagery selected from art history. Reducing the visual data to a limited amount of recognizable information, Liedgren explores the contradictions involved in how memory shapes our way of perceiving information.
